Other Workforce: Our DBS Application Guide

other workforce

Recently, we’ve had some queries about which roles would require you to select ‘Other Workforce’ on a DBS application.

When submitting a DBS application you must include the relevant workforce(s) for your role. The accurate completion of this field is vital.

It’s required for consideration by the police – and if filled out incorrectly your application could be significantly delayed.

You will be asked to choose one of the following DBS workforce types:

  • Child Workforce
  • Adult Workforce
  • Child and adult Workforce
  • Other Workforce

An applicant should select Other when they require a DBS check but their role is unrelated to either children or vulnerable adults.

For Enhanced Disclosures these job roles can be sorted into the following areas:

Gambling

The Other Workforce option must be selected if you’re applying for, or renewing, a license to run premises where gambling takes place.

This actually includes any establishment that sells National Lottery tickets (or even just promotes it in any way).

You’ll also need to choose this option if applying to work at the Gambling Commission.

Immigration roles

If you job role requires registration by the Immigration Services you should select Other Workforce.

This covers those who would be providing advice and information on immigration.

However, this DOES NOT apply to those within the UK Border Agency.

Drugs and weaponry

If your role requires the possession of any controlled substance you will need to select Other Workforce.

The same applies to those in possession of any weapon or ammunition – including armed guards on UK ships.

National Security Roles

If your job falls under the umbrella of National Security e.g. MI5, then that particular organisation would also need to submit and Enhanced DBS application and select Other Workforce.

A summary

We’ve highlighted some of the main roles that come under the ‘Other’ category.

However, there are some others to be aware of.

Please note that these roles are only eligible for a Standard Disclosure:

  • Barrister
  • Chartered accountant or Certified accountant
  • Veterinary surgeon
  • Chartered Legal Executive or a Chartered Institute of Legal Executive authorised person
  • Solicitor
  • Registered foreign lawyer
  • Actuary
