What is a Standard DBS check?
A Standard DBS check, previously called a Standard CRB Check, is the second-most thorough background check facilitated by the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). From April 2025 – March 2026, uCheck processed over 56,000 Standard DBS checks, making us the second-largest provider, right behind the UK government’s Security Industry Authority.
With the introduction of the Employment Rights Act 2025, receiving prompt DBS check results before an employee’s contract begins is more important than ever to help prove legal compliance and keep business operations smooth.
What does a Standard DBS check show?
A Standard DBS check shows:
- Spent and unspent convictions
- Cautions
- Warnings
- Reprimands
A Standard check builds on the information from a Basic DBS check, but doesn’t include additional information from relevant police forces like an Enhanced DBS check does. It also can’t be used with a Barred Lists check.
Who needs a Standard DBS check?
Standard DBS checks are available for people applying for or involved in a role listed in the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975.
Here are some examples of job roles or industries where you’re likely to be eligible for a Standard check:
- People in a position of financial responsibility or control, e.g. directors or accountants
- Veterinary surgeon
- Barristers and solicitors
- Roles as part of the Fraud Authority
- Members of the Locksmiths Association
Currently, individuals and self-employed people can’t order a Standard DBS check for themselves. It can only be requested on someone’s behalf by their employer.
How long does a Standard DBS check take?
Our average turnaround time for a DBS Standard Check is just 48 hours. However, we can’t always guarantee this as we rely on the resources of the DBS and the relevant police forces.

How our Standard DBS checks work
All our checks – including our DBS checks – can be completed on our Atlas platform, saving you time and effort when screening your employees.
Here’s how it works:
- Click ‘Start a new application’ and fill out the six following sections. This covers personal information, address history, and ID information.
- Complete the declaration that all information is correct to the best of your knowledge, and click ‘Sign and Submit’.
- The application will then progress through to the Disclosure and Barring Service, where the applicant’s details are searched on the Police National Computer.
- Keep an eye on your Atlas dashboard – but you’ll also receive an email notification with a summary of the results to keep for your records for six months.
