What is a Standard DBS Check?
A Standard DBS Check (formerly a Standard CRB Check) is one of the four main types of criminal record checks that reveal any spent or unspent convictions, cautions, final warnings or reprimands the applicant has.
Who can obtain a Standard DBS check?
A person will be eligible for a Standard DBS if they are undertaking a role listed in the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975. This includes a number of positions, professions, licences and activities (see the DBS website for details). However, only employers can request a Standard Disclosure on behalf of an employee. Current legislation in England and Wales does not allow individuals or self-employed people to apply for a Standard DBS Check on themselves.
I was impressed with their swift attention to my queries – an efficient, understanding and caring service.
How long does a Standard DBS Check take?
Our average turnaround time for a DBS Standard Check is just 48 hours. However, we can’t always guarantee this as we rely on the resources of the DBS and the relevant police forces.
Is a Standard DBS the same as a Basic DBS?
No – unlike the Basic DBS, the Standard DBS Check requires the applicant to be meet specific eligibility criteria. As with Enhanced Disclosures, the applicant must be undertaking a particular role or activity in order for you to request a Standard Disclosure for them.
What documents does the applicant need to provide for a Standard DBS Check?
The requirements for ID documents are the same for both Enhanced and Standard DBS Checks.
If the applicant is a non-UK national undertaking paid work, you’ll need to check their right to work document(s) in addition to documents confirming their address.
Other applicants have a number of other possible document combinations to choose from, generally comprising a primary document combined with supporting documents to verify their name and address.
If this sounds complicated, don’t worry – the uCheck Platform will guide you through the process, indicating which documents are suitable for each applicant. Full ID checking guidance can be found on the DBS website.
