What is a Basic CRB Check?

A Basic CRB Check is a check of any conditional cautions and unspent convictions, under the terms of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. A Basic CRB Check can be obtained by anyone living or looking to live and work in England and Wales.

Just so you know – a conviction can be deemed ‘spent’ after a certain period of time has passed. This period of time varies based on the severity and nature of the offence, as well as the length of the sentence received. A conditional caution is deemed to be ‘spent’ after 3 months.

Why would I need an Individual Basic Criminal Record Check?

As well as looking to obtain a Basic CRB Check for employment, you may also need to have a Basic Check to get a visa or personal alcohol licence. Individual Basic CRB Checks may also come in handy if you wish to do voluntary work.

CRB Checks for self-employed individuals can be very useful. Many people who are self-employed apply for a Basic CRB Check as evidence of their character and background.

So how do I apply for a CRB Check on myself?

It’s easy to apply for a Basic Individual Check with our simple online system. Step one is where you provide your personal data. You will need to input your address history for the past 5 years, personal information and payment details.

Step two is getting your ID verified. You will need to show your ID to someone who isn’t a partner or relative of yourself. If you need help in identifying which ID documents you will need to get evidenced please click here.

1. Complete your Personal Details

To do this you just need to click on the orange Start My Check button. You will be guided through each straightforward stage. You will also have use of our comprehensive Support facility if you need any help.

2. ID Information

You will be sent a separate link which will enable you to record which identity documents have been independently verified. You can view the list of acceptable documents here on the DBS website.

3. Application Processing

We will make some final checks on your data and then your application will be sent to the DBS for processing. Please note that if the DBS have a query on your application they will contact you directly.

4. Results

We will let you know as soon as your application has completed processing with the DBS*. You will receive your certificate in the post & you can also log in to our uCheck Platform to view the summary result online.

*We will always notify you by email. Where you have provided a mobile telephone number we will also send you a text.

Can I apply for a Standard/ Enhanced DBS Check?

Unfortunately, you can’t request Standard or Enhanced CRB Checks directly as an individual. If you have been told you specifically require a Standard or Enhanced Check, please contact your employer.

If you require a Standard or Enhanced CRB Check, this is the information that your employers will see. Standard CRB Checks will show any unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands and final warnings, as well as any spent convictions or cautions that were not removed by filtering.

Enhanced CRB Checks will show the same information as a Standard CRB Check, but will also include any intelligence provided by the police, which they feel may be relevant when making recruitment decisions.

An Enhanced CRB Check with Barred List Check, provides the same information as an Enhanced only level Check, but also includes any information on the Adults’ and/or Children’s Barred lists.

Overseas Postage

If you live overseas, choosing this option will ensure that your certificate is sent to you ‘tracked and signed for’.

Those living outside of the UK may benefit from using this service as the DBS cannot guarantee that your certificate will reach you.
