Other Workforce On DBS Checks: What Does It Mean?

Have you come across the term ‘other workforce’ on DBS applications?

When you apply for a DBS check, it’s a mandatory requirement to select a workforce type on the application form. You can select the following workforce types:

  • Child Workforce
  • Adult Workforce
  • Child and Adult Workforce
  • Other Workforce

Both the child and adult workforce types relate to those whose roles involve working with either or both vulnerable groups. But what does mean to select ‘other workforce’ on DBS checks? And who is entitled to select this workforce type?

Who should select ‘other workforce’ on DBS checks?

‘Other workforce’ is a piece of DBS check terminology that describes roles which are eligible for a DBS check, but not mainly due to interaction with children or vulnerable adults.

‘Other workforce’ applies to both standard and enhanced checks, and includes a number of roles eligible for both of these levels. So, let’s explore what types of job role require you to select ‘other workforce’.

Standard DBS check

For a standard level DBS check, the following roles are eligible, and should select ‘other workforce’ on the application form:

  • Accountant/solicitor on entry to the profession
  • Veterinary surgeon on entry to the profession
  • Those working in prisons, remand centres, detention centres etc.
  • Locksmith (who is a member of MLA)

Enhanced DBS check

For an enhanced level DBS check, roles which should select ‘other workforce’ can be split into the following categories:

Immigration

Any individual whose role requires registration to the Immigration Services Commissioner for providing immigration advice or services should select ‘other workforce’ when their employer applies for the check.

National Security

Individuals who are applying for employment for the purposes of national security for the following organisations; UK Atomic Energy Authority, Financial Conduct Authority, and the Prudential Regulation Authority.

Gambling

Individuals who are applying for or renewing a licence to operate a gambling service will most often require an enhanced DBS check. This would also include individuals who are working for the Gambling Commission.

Judicial appointments/the Crown

Those who are appointed to judicial appointments, such as judges, as well as anyone who is applying for employment with the Crown.

Taxi/private hire drivers

If you’re applying for or renewing a taxi or private hire licence then you’ll be eligible for an enhanced DBS check with ‘other workforce’ selected. However, these applicants would also be eligible for both a children’s and adult’s barred list check, due to the nature of their role.

As with all DBS checks, an individual cannot apply for the check themselves – their employer must do so. If you’re a taxi/private hire driver operating without an employer, then your local council should be able to apply for the DBS on your behalf.

Selecting ‘other workforce’ is appropriate for job roles eligible for either level of DBS check, but only where the eligibility is not mainly based on interaction with children or vulnerable adults.
