There are a number of advantages of the DBS Update Service. One of the most notable is that, through the service, a single DBS application could last you a lifetime!

But how, we hear you ask, is that possible and what are the other advantages?

How does the DBS Update Service work?

Once you have received the result of your DBS Disclosure, head to the dedicated DBS Update Service website.

Here you can join this service for an annual fee of £13 (or free for volunteers). Details of costs can be found here.

How the Update Service works is simple.

Your DBS Disclosure will be kept up to date, allowing you to take it from role to role – provided it’s within the same workforce and the role requires the same type and level of check.

You are able to join the Update Service once your application has been countersigned and submitted to the DBS for processing.

Just ask your employer, or the person who submitted the application, for the application form reference number.

And there’s no need to panic if this isn’t possible. You can sign up to the DBS Update Service within 19 calendar days of issuing of your DBS Disclosure, using the certificate number.

What are the advantages of the DBS Update Service?

Using the DBS Update Service can save you both time and money. You only have to pay for one DBS Disclosure – and you won’t have to wait for it to be renewed.

Additionally, the Update Service might just give you a crucial edge when applying for new roles as you will already have an up-to-date DBS Disclosure.

There are advantages of the DBS Update Service for employers too.

They can check your DBS Disclosure instantly online and do not need to fill in or process any paper forms.

Employers may also find their recruitment process becomes more efficient when the Update Service is used for reviewing and renewing DBS Disclosures.

For further information and full guidance on the DBS Update Service, visit the DBS website.

Here you will find FAQs and terms and conditions as well as exceptions of the service.

Please note that this is a service offered only by the Disclosure and Barring Service and is not available through uCheck. Don’t say we don’t look after you.
