What is a DBS Check?
A DBS Check is a criminal record check carried out by the Disclosure and Barring Service. DBS Checks are a requirement for some roles, professions and activities.
There are three different levels of DBS Check – Basic, Standard and Enhanced. The criminal record information that will be revealed by the check depends on what level it is:
- A Basic DBS Check will show any unspent convictions or conditional cautions the applicant has.
- A Standard Check will show any spent or unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands or warnings the applicant has.
- An Enhanced DBS Check will show the same information as a Standard Check, plus any additional information held by local police considered relevant to the role in question.
Enhanced DBS Checks may also show whether the applicant is barred from working with children and/or adults, if the role is eligible and the employer requests this information.
DBS Checks for cabin crew
Airports and airlines often ask for applicants to have a Basic Criminal Record Check before commencing work with them.
A Basic Check is a requirement to obtain an airside pass. You will also require an equivalent overseas certificate for all countries in which you’ve lived continuously for six months or in the previous five years.
How do I get a Basic DBS Check?
Unlike Standard or Enhanced DBS Checks, individuals can apply for a Basic Check for themselves. You can apply for a Basic Criminal Record Check here.
Your employer may ask you to do this as part of the recruitment process, or they may organise the check on your behalf. As such, it is important to confirm with your employer if they will be requesting the check on you, or if they would like you to obtain it yourself.
Anyone aged 16 or over can have a Basic DBS Check – there are no further eligibility requirements.
When completing the application, you will need to provide some personal details, including your address history for the last five years.
