What is a driving licence check?
Driving licence checks are provided by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) through an online service.
The check enables employers to securely verify an employee or potential employee’s driving licence information, as held by the DVLA.
Employers should carry out driving licence checks on anyone they employ to drive, as well as any employee who drives in the course of their duties (even if it’s not the main part of their job).
Checks should also be regularly renewed to ensure employees haven’t picked up any penalty points, convictions or disqualifications that would make them unsuitable to carry out their role.
What will DVLA checks show?
A DVLA check will show:
- The expiry date of the applicant’s licence
- The types of vehicle the applicant is licensed to drive
- The applicant’s licence validity, including any disqualifications
- Any penalty points or offences on the applicant’s driving record
